The Beginning

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

When it comes to designing a home, many of us are often stuck between wanting to splurge on beautiful items and wanting to stick to a budget. Fortunately, there are several ways to create a beautiful home without breaking the bank.

First, let’s talk about up-thrifting. Up-thrifting is the process of taking old items and giving them a new life. You can find great pieces at thrift stores, yard sales, and online. Look for items that have a good shape or interesting details that you can make your own. For example, an old dresser can be turned into a beautiful stand for a TV, or an old trunk can be repurposed into a coffee table. Even items from a dollar store can be painted, glued or re-worked to look like a piece right from the pages Architectural Digest.

Another way to create a beautiful home while sticking to a budget is to re-use items you already own. Look around your home and see what you can use in new ways. Moving a piece of furniture to a new location can change your space dramatically. A sofa pushed up against a wall can be pulled out and paired with matching (or mismatched) chairs to create a cozy sitting area. Recovering old or dated furniture is another way to give your space an update. Have an old crib mattress laying around? If you are even a little bit handy, you can build an outdoor bed swing and use the crib mattress as a cushion. Can you imagine the serenity!

Finally, don’t be afraid to look at items that are way out of your budget. This is the best way to determine what you like and will really help to get those creative juices flowing. This will help you get those creative juices flowing on how you can create a piece or a look for a fraction of the cost but with the same effect.
